Official News Blog and Website Wrapper, January 2004
The Residents' Official News Blog and Website Wrapper was a news blog maintained by Big Brother of The Cryptic Corporation beginning in August 2003, following the company's purchase of the residents.com domain name from fan site RZWeb (now defunct).
The blog later developed into the BOG, a dedicated news blog which was The Cryptics' (and thus, The Residents') main outlet for communication with their fans until the website's redesign in 2008.
This page collects posts made to this news blog in January 2004, as archived on archive.org, transcribed to this wiki by a Mysterious Spanish Lady.

The True Meaning of Brumalia
- As the end of the 12 Days comes into sight, it is important that we not forget the true meaning of Brumalia.
- Five thousand years of human history--maybe more--have enfolded this season with rich traditions. Some celebrate Christmas, some Chanukah, maybe Kwanzaa, Yule (Jule), Sinterklaas, New Years, Winter Solstice and even in some rare cases, Saturnia and Brumalia. And that's just a few from our Western Cultures. The important thing is to observe the cycle of life and acknowledge it with a bit of celebration. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Take a walk and check out a dead leaf. Remember that, while today is just the day after yesterday, it is also a new beginning. Each human is allowed a limited number of year cycles. Make 2004 count and do something cool this year.

The 12th Day of Brumalia
- Big Hand
- If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
- -Henry David Thoreau
- The Epiphany - the 13th Day
- Epiphany is the day after the 12 Days of Brumalia and the climax of the entire Holiday Season and the Twelve Days of Brumalia, which are counted from December 25th until today - January 5th. The twelfth day of Brumalia is called Twelfth Night, which some cultures observe with feasting.
- Epiphany goes by other names. It is known as Three Kings’ Day, el Dia de los Tres Reyes, Driekoningendag and Theophany. Originally, a solemn Christmas was observed on Epiphany, but in the fifth century, the popularity of party-oriented Brumalia on December 25th was so great that the Catholic church confiscated the date and moved Christmas on top of it. Ever since, there has been this schizoid feeling about the holidays among Christians... is it a serious religious holiday with mangers and such, or is it a party time with colored lights and Santa.
- But I digress.
- Thank you for participating in our Brumalian celebration.
- The Cryptic Corporation, and The Residents invite you to join us again tomorrow, the 6th of January for The Feast of Epiphany.

Archiving and sharing of Brumalia songs
- I've had a couple of questions about archiving and sharing the Brumalian recordings. You already know that the Residents do not support illegal downloading, P2P sharing, and mp3 trading without the permission of the artist. And I don't think anybody would have to think too hard to realize that we could archive and share these songs at Residents.com if that was what we wanted to do.
- Actually though, it isn't what we want to do. The Brumalian recordings were part of a fun event that took place in real time over 12 days. They are not intended to be downloaded at once and listened to whenever someone feels like it. It has to happen during the 12 days of Brumalia, and Brumalia comes but once a year.
- The people who visit our blog DESERVE special treatment without the rest of the world who missed this (and will soon miss our exciting future events) acting like they are being treated poorly. Brumalian songs were here for two weeks. No one who really cares would go two weeks without checking the blog, right?
- To the people who missed Brumalia, I suggest you mark your calendars now.... December 25 is when it all starts.
- And to the people who never missed a Brumalian day, you are invited to share your songs with people you love.

Cheap Wine in Plastic Cups
- Big Brother as paparazzi
- I caught Cryptic's Homer Flynn hanging with long time friend and artist/ musician, Mark Mothersbough, at a recent gallery opening of Mark's work in San Francisco. I tried to get a shot of other Cryptic guy, Hardy Fox, but he left early.

Disfigured Night DVD now available
- Ralph America has finally received the long awaited DVD edition of Disfigured Night. Euro Ralph will also carry this DVD.
- The DVD, as expected, contains the original broadcast version which was shot by VIVA (German music TV) in celebration for the Residents 25th Anniversary.
- Also on the disc is a unique video remix - by The Residents - of the entire 31 minute performance. This was created by taking feeds directly from the cameras before the graphics were inserted to replace the green screen. Therefore the green screen could be removed and enhanced with new backgrounds. This new 2003 full length rethinking of the story of Silly Billy is accompanied by both a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround mix AND a PCM Stereo mix for those without surround systems. NTSC, 4:3 ratio picture.
- Package Details:
- 8"x8" hardbound book
- 24 page booklet
- edition 1350 hand numbered
