Eskimo Remastered
Eskimo Remastered was a one-night-only presentation of The Residents' 1979 album Eskimo at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, as part of the venue's Off the Screen cinema arts series, on October 16th 2014.
The event presented Eskimo as a "multichannel, 3D sound spectactular" mixed live by sound designer Jeremiah Moore through the Exploratorium's 100+ speaker Meyer Sound Constellation system. The Residents were in attendance, but did not perform.
The live mix was recorded by Moore, and was later released as a free digital EP titled Eskimo Live at the Exploratorium on September 26th 2026.
History
For Eskimo Remastered, sound designer Jeremiah Moore used a fresh digital transfer of the original sixteen-track Eskimo multitrack master tapes to create a live, "multichannel, 3D sound" mix of the album through the 100+ speaker Meyer Sound Constellation system in the Exploratorium's Kanbar Forum, synchronized to visuals from The Residents' 2002 Eskimo DVD.
Moore used Pro Tools panners and Meyer/LCS Spacemap panners to create "diffusion and spatialization" effects live on stage, stating that "the semi-abstracted environmental nature of the sounds of Eskimo lent themselves beautifully to wild spatializations, which enhanced the story (and sonic!) aspects of the piece in exciting ways."
Tickets to the 7pm show sold out prior to the night; as a result, a second performance at 9pm was added "by popular demand". Although The Residents were present, they did not perform at the event. They would later perform a live rendition of their 2017 album The Ghost of Hope at the Exploratorium shortly after that album's release.
At least one of the two presentations of Eskimo Remastered was recorded by Moore; after remaining unheard by most people for over a decade after the event, Moore's recording was released as a digital EP, titled Eskimo Live at the Exploratorium, on September 26th 2026 as a free bonus with that month's Cherry Red Records Residents newsletter.
Digital release
Eskimo Live at the Exploratorium (or EskimoExploratorium) is a digital EP by The Residents, featuring a recording of their 1979 album Eskimo as mixed live for multichannel 3D sound by Jeremiah Moore at the Exploratorium in San Francisco on October 16th 2014. The recording was made by Moore during the event, and was provided to The Residents at their request several years later.[1]
The EP was released as a free bonus download with the September 2026 issue of the Cherry Red Records Residents newsletter on September 26th 2026. No cover art was included with the download; the recording was split into four tracks, each between ten and twelve minutes in length.
It was originally planned for release via The Residents' upcoming Bandcamp page under the title Eskimo Mixed Live: Exploratorium, however it was ultimately released as a free download when a representative of Cherry Red Records suggested that it made "most sense to let people have it" one day after the release of the group's mini-album Eskimo Folk Tales, and on the 47th anniversary of the release of the original Eskimo album.[2]
