Night of Ideas

From RZWiki

Night of Ideas is an annual "marathon of talks, performances, art and collective imagination" organized by French arts institution Villa Albertine, which has been held across various American cities since 2022.

The Residents performed a "condensed" live arrangement of their 1979 concept album Eskimo at the San Francisco Public Library on March 2nd 2024, as part of the 2024 San Francisco Night of Ideas event.[1][2] The performance followed the cancellation of a planned God In 3 Persons - Live! mini-tour of the UK and Europe in April 2024,[3] and the departure of The Residents' long-time collaborator, guitarist Nolan Cook.[4]

In 2025, The Residents developed an expanded version of the Eskimo live show for an American tour, which premiered at the Exotikon Exotica and Tiki Festival in Los Angeles on June 7th 2025, with further dates planned for January and March 2026.

History

Announcement

In February 2024, it was announced that The Residents were scheduled to perform at the San Francisco Public Library on March 2nd 2024 as part of Night of Ideas, a "marathon of talks, performances, art and collective imagination" held annually by French arts institution Villa Albertine in multiple cities across America.

Shortly thereafter, The Cryptic Corporation announced that The Residents' performance at the library would be a "condensed" live adaptation of their 1979 concept album Eskimo. The show was free, although attendees were required to register for entry.[1][2]

The performance

The Residents' performance, the last of the day's events, began at 11:30pm in the main library,[5] and lasted 33 minutes. The show featured The Residents in a four person line-up, performing a 25 minute suite of abridged arrangements of all six tracks from Eskimo.

Onstage, The Residents' instrument stands were obscured by TV screens displaying visuals derived from the Eskimo album art, while the library's larger video screen, positioned directly above the stage, displayed clips from the Eskimo DVD, along with other newly created visuals.

The instrumental opening piece, "The Walrus Hunt", was performed by only three Residents; they were joined by The Singing Resident for the second piece, "Birth". After the conclusion of the Eskimo suite, The Residents joined The Singing Resident on center-stage for a round of applause from the audience, before returning to their instruments to perform the closing number, "Diskomo".

This was The Residents' first major live appearance since 1997 to not feature guitarist Nolan Cook, who parted ways with the group following their 50th Anniversary tour, Faceless Forever.[4][6] A new member of the group, described as "a woman who is an incredible electric violin player and singer",[7] made her first appearance with The Residents at this show.

Three days after the event, a post to The Residents' official website and social media channels described the show as "a BLAST", while also warning that "it might not ever happen again".[8] In early 2025, however, it was announced that The Residents were planning an expanded, re-imagined live adaptation of Eskimo for an American tour, which premiered in June with a performance at Exotikon Exotica and Tiki Festival in Los Angeles. The Eskimo Live tour will officially commence in January 2026, with possible dates in England, Europe and Japan beginning in March.
