The Enigmatic Foe is a character created by The Residents, who appears as one of the principal figures in the operetta Not Available, developed and recorded in 1974 and released in 1978.

The Enigmatic Foe's role in the operetta is unclear until near its climax, where the "noble" Foe takes the place of the Porcupine in a pistol duel with his rival Catbird, over the affections of the central character, the "lovely young" Edweena.[1] The duel is narrowly averted when the three participants realize that Edweena has in fact eloped with the operetta's hitherto "objective" and "uninvolved" narrator, Uncle Remus.[1]

On the album and in an early 1970s photograph by Denise Byroads which has been associated with the character in more recent years, The Enigmatic Foe is portrayed by The Singing Resident.[2]
