The Catbird is a character created by The Residents, who is one of the principal figures in their operetta Not Available, originally developed and recorded in 1974 and released in 1978.

In the operetta, the Catbird faces the Porcupine in a tense rivalry over the affections of the "lovely young" Edweena,[1] leading to a near-duel between the Catbird and the Porcupine's stand-in, the Enigmatic Foe. The duel is averted when the participants realise that Edweena has, in the meantime, eloped with Uncle Remus, the story's hitherto "objective" Greek chorus.

The Catbird is depicted on the album by The Singing Resident; the character has also (in later years) been said to be depicted in a 1972 Denise Byroads photograph (from the "Dog Show" photo session), where he is portrayed by another member of the group.
