The Porcupine is a character created by The Residents, one of the principal figures in their operetta Not Available, originally developed and recorded in 1974 and released in 1978.

In the operetta, the Porcupine is the long-time lover of Edweena, who faces a rival to Edweena's affections, the Catbird; the resulting tensions lead the Porcupine to suffer a breakdown and hide in a bush, while his stand-in, the "noble" Enigmatic Foe,[1] takes his place in a climactic pistol duel with the Catbird. The duel is narrowly averted when the participants discover that Edweena has eloped with Uncle Remus, the story's hitherto "distant and objective" Greek chorus.[1]

The Porcupine is portrayed on the album by The Singing Resident (who also voices the Porcupine's rival, the Catbird). The character is said to be depicted in an early 1970s Denise Byroads photograph which first publicly appeared (without reference to the Porcupine) on the cover of Buy Or Die! #3, Ralph Records' third mail-order catalog, in February 1978.
