The Residents officially premiered their debut live tour The Mole Show on October 26th 1982 with the first of two sold out shows at the Kabuki Theatre in San Francisco, California.[1]
The show had previously been previewed in a stripped-back, music-only rehearsal show at The House in Santa Monica in April. The Kabuki shows saw the debut of the full-fledged Mole Show, with dancers, props, sets and narration.
This show was photographed by Randy Bachman;[2] the photos (which portray the full stage set-up at numerous points in the show) have been widely published in relation to the tour, including on the Historical section of The Residents' official website, and in the 2022 art book A Sight For Sore Eyes, Vol. 1.[2]
One of the Kabuki shows (likely this one) was professionally filmed; footage from the show is featured on the Mole Show Live in San Francisco DVD included in the limited edition Mole Show "bag set" released in 2009.
Reception

The show was reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle, who described the show thus: "The art-school crowd assembled on Tuesday at the Kabuki sat in rapt attention while dancers frolicked on a stage flanked by giant cartoon-like paintings, sporting various weird props, as the band worked its way through an obscure allegory about moles and their culture."[1]
