German Slide Music is an unreleased instrumental suite of at least six parts, recorded by The Residents in February 1975, and mixed and compiled in July of that year,[1] between recording sessions for their 1976 album The Third Reich 'n Roll.[2]
Parts of the suite were used in the production of the Schwump single "Aphids In The Hall", released on Ralph Records in 1976. Excerpts were heard as background music in The Residents Radio Special, originally issued as a promotional cassette in 1977.
Parts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 of the suite were issued in their original mix for the first time in 2018 on the pREServed two disc edition of The Third Reich 'n Roll; the complete tape has been earmarked for a possible future release on vinyl.[3]
History

The existence of German Slide Music first became known to fans of The Residents in January 2018, with the announcement of the pREServed edition of the group's second album The Third Reich 'n Roll. This set included an edited version of the tape, which constitutes roughly half of the original 30 minute suite.[2]
Seemingly improvised and experimental in nature, German Slide Music is notable in that it features a guest appearance from Portland radio DJ Barry "Schwump" Schwam, and that it features more traditional "rock group" instrumentation (including a standard drum kit),[4] a rarity in The Residents' work at that time.
Asked for further information about this tape, "Captain Doc" of The Cryptic Corporation, Homer Flynn, explained he could not remember anything about the recording of the piece, instead simply suggesting that fans "try to enjoy it".[2]
Release
Parts of German Slide Music were used in the production of Schwump's 1976 single "Aphids In The Hall", and as backing music in The Residents' promotional Radio Special in 1977.[4]
Excerpts from the suite were released in their original mix on the pREServed edition of The Third Reich 'n Roll in 2018. This set featured five edited sections of the suite (parts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6), all issued for the first time.
The full German Slide Music suite has been earmarked for release at an unknown time in the future as part of a vinyl pREServed sub-series, possibly as part of a release also featuring unspecified "multi-track explorations" and unreleased pieces of music from the master tapes of The Third Reich 'n Roll.[3]
