- 1st: Bobuck's Eggs for Breakfast — a compilation of "Tiny Tunes" released throughout the year of 2016, including the BLACK TAR album — is released on CD by Klanggalerie.
- 3rd: A listening party is announced for The Ghost of Hope at the San Francisco Exploratorium.
- 4th: Cherry Red Records announce that they have signed The Residents and acquired access to their entire back catalog.
- The free track "Doors" is given to subscribers of their new mailing list.
March
- 3rd: Snakefinger's Manual of Errors is reissued by Klanggalerie.
- 15th: The 13th Anniversary Show: Live in Holland is reissued on vinyl by Secret Records.
- 15th: Hardy Fox publishes the first chapter of his novel The Stone.
- 17th: The In Between Dreams world tour is announced.
- Randy Rose expresses his outrage at having been replaced as lead singer of The Residents by a character named Tyrone.
- 21st - 23rd: The Residents perform In Between Dreams for three nights in Tokyo, Japan.
- 24th: The Ghost of Hope is released on CD and vinyl by Cherry Red / MVD, and special vinyl editions by Psychofon.
- 30th: The Residents give a surprise full-album performance of The Ghost of Hope at the San Francisco Exploratorium.
- The Safe as Milk festival, on which The Residents were scheduled to perform, is cancelled.
April
- 15th: Hardy Fox publishes Wallpaper — an adaptation of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman — for free on his website.
- 22nd: Diskomo / Goosebump is reissued by Music On Vinyl for Record Store Day.
- 26th: dot.com is reissued by Klanggalerie with bonus selections from the Radio Thoreau project.
May
- 15th: Bobuck's Clank Clank Clank EP — sketches from the abandoned Meet the Residents 40th anniversary project — is released on Klanggalerie's TOOK sub-label.
July
- 1st: Bobuck's fifth solo album, Nineteen-sixty-seven, is released by Klanggalerie.
- 7th: Matteo Torcinovich's Ralph Records Artworks 1972-2015 is published by Goodfellas.
- 26th: Cherry Red announces the 80 Aching Orphans compilation and the upcoming pREServed archival series.
August
- 6th: Sarah Cahill hosts a Residents radio special on KALW; "Santa Dog '17" is premiered.
- 24th: The Snakey Wake is reissued on vinyl by Secret Records.
- 31st: Title in Limbo is reissued by Klanggalerie with the original 4 Daze demo on a bonus disc.
September
- 17th: The Double Trouble trailer is uploaded to YouTube.
- 25th: The I AM A RESIDENT! PledgeMusic campaign is launched. With a US$10 access pass, fans could submit their own versions of Residents songs to be included in an album. On this same campaign, the Intruders album is also announced with a demo of "Frank's Lament".
October
- 1st: On the final Hacienda Bridge newsletter, The Stone is concluded and Hardy Fox reveals himself as the lead composer of The Residents.
- 13th: 80 Aching Orphans, a 4-CD compilation of 80 Residents selections, is released by Cherry Red.
- 13th: Hardy Fox releases the Left with the Fires EP by Black Tar and the Cry Babies, in order to raise charity money for pets abandoned after the 2017 California wildfires.
- 16th: Bobuck's Egg Booty — the second collection of "Tiny Tunes" — is released by Klanggalerie.
- 28th: The Residents perform In Between Dreams in Lodz, Poland.

- 1st: The I AM A RESIDENT! PledgeMusic campaign is concluded. Participants still have two more weeks to submit their song covers.
- 15th: I AM A RESIDENT! participants are given one more day to submit their song covers.
- 16th: The I AM A RESIDENT! submission period is concluded with over 200 song submissions.
- 19th: Pleasantly surprised at the amount of song submissions, The Residents decide to take a new approach to the I AM A RESIDENT! album. Instead of simply picking their favorite covers and putting them on a disc, submissions would be collaged into brand new suites with overdubs and additions by The Residents themselves. (A second disc of their favorite covers is still produced.)
- Fans are surveyed to elect two submissions for inclusion on a special 7" single that was offered as a perk item in the campaign.
- 27th: Hardy Fox opens his own Bandcamp store, but only three tracks have ever been released on it.
