- 2nd: Tony Bennett releases I Left My Heart in San Francisco, covered by The Residents as part of the Subterranean Modern anthology album.

- James Brown releases his cover of Night Train, covered by The Residents in 1984 on "George & James"
April
- Chubby Checker releases 'Der Twist Beginnt', late sampled on The Residents' 1974 track "Swastikas on Parade"
May
- The people who would become The Residents finish their Junior year of High School.
August
- 17th: The Tornados releases Telstar, covered by the Residents in 1974 for The Third Reich 'n Roll
September
- 5th: Elvis Presley releases Return To Sender.
- The people who would become The Residents start their Senior year of High School.
October
- 1st: Richard Chamberlain releases his cover of 'Love Me Tender' a song The Residents would go on to cover as part of The King & Eye.
- Chris Kenner releases Land of 1000 Dances, covered by The Residents several times throughout their history
Unknown Dates
- Frank and Clyde Playing the Music You Asked For is released. The album proves to be a personal favorite of Charles Bobuck, who samples it as the basis for his Maxine album.
- Fred Frith starts learning guitar
