Notes From Ralph

"There were four guys from Louisiana, and they came out to California in the late '60s, and... started doing some weird stuff together, and hated their day jobs and... had a little niche. They sort of created The Cryptic Corporation in... probably the mid '70s, actually. I mean, they started The Residents before The Cryptic Corporation, so... they started doing music in... probably late '68, '69, '70, but... very, uh... non-musicianship music, let's say. And it sort of developed because some people just have natural talent, and, you know, that's what I found when I got there, that these people just had no idea what they were doing, but they were doing it. And they were doing something... you know, that for the most part was very creative, you know, very original, which is very hard to find in music."

"I think [The Residents consider themselves] probably a band, probably an art collective, you know, artists, you know... Like I said, they weren't really... a rock 'n' roll band... but they always thought of themselves as a band, so... I can't really speak for them, but you know, just me seeing them, I mean, you know... they weren't a band, they weren't artists, they were everything, you know. And it was just very interesting. And then, the ideas that they had for doing things that were really never done... You know... there's some wild ideas... but everything very creative, you know."

"It's just a natural chemistry thing, to me... I mean the chemistry has been disrupted somewhat here in their later years, but... I can't really say..."

"It's not about anonymity and this and that, it's about making interesting music, and trying to get people... slap 'em across the face or something, I don't know... it's like... the painters from the '30s and '40s who were doing very avant-garde things... just a slap in the face. Andy Warhol, slap in the face... it's the same kind of stuff."
