DAY OF THE DEAD

I'm just back from the grave.

As usual on November 1, a bunch of us go to a local abandoned graveyard to pull weeds and wash down the head stones.  This graveyard was never a commercial site.  It was used by one family in this neighborhood in the late 1800s.  The family has been gone a long time, and all the children grew up, moved away and died somewhere else.  No one visits the graves but us.

We don't just work though.  We also drink beer, sharing most of it with the graves.  The tradition of pouring beer on graves is an old one.

After an hour or so we gather in a circle and hold hands.  We look at each other and laugh nervously.  We feel the warmth of each others hands.  We feel our friendship and respect for each other.

As I look from face to face, I realize that over time each of us will disappear from the circle.  Each will lose warm hands as the life force escapes.  In time all of us will join the ones in the ground.  It is sad, but not sad.

I invite each of you to take a few seconds to join us in holding warm hands remembering someone you loved who has died.  A friend, a lover, a parent, even a pet.  Then take a deep breath and get on with the business of living.  You still have things you need to do.

Gurdy Hurding - Renaldo & The Loaf

Greener Postures - Snakefinger

Also out on Klanggalerie in November is the second album that Snakefinger wrote with The Residents. Greener Postures.

why is it cool?

• Remastered - mastering technology has come a long way in 30 years.

ASK HARDY SHIT

Q: Was more Live Residents video shot and, if so, why was it not released to the public?

More video was shot after consumer video became an option.  The Residents pre-date the concept of home video so shooting video used to be very expensive and involved a complicated set-up.

Even considering that, look at the psychology of live performance.  It works because humans are doing something in real time in front of a group of people.  Groups are affected by a type of mass hysteria.  It is this hysteria, often euphoric reaction, that makes concerts, religious gatherings and political rallies function.  It doesn't translate to video.

Additionally, a lot of video suffers from bad shooting, bad lighting, bad sound and bad performance.

On the marketing side, there is considerably less interest from fans for live performance DVDs.  They are expensive to create and do not sell very well.

Concert footage will remain rare, I suspect.

Q: What is your favorite Residents album?  Bobuck album?  Non-Residents Ralph album?

That is kind of like asking which is your favorite child.  I see different albums striving to bring different aspects to the listener's attention.  But I will not cheat you.  Here are answers that I might change later today as my mood changes.

Residents: The Ughs!  I have, over the many years, grown tired of most of the well known Residents album.  I listened to The Ughs recently and it was so fresh and clean that I felt like I was hearing them as a virgin.

Bobuck: Coochie Brake  Underrated, it totters between being a Bobuck or a Residents album and has had a hard time finding an identity.  Though it is 100% Bobuck, it will be sold along side The Residents catalog.

Non-Residents old Ralph: Half-Mute by Tuxedomoon.  Maybe a sentimental favorite since I brought the band to the attention of Ralph originally.  That particular Tuxmoon member line-up was always my favorite.  Brown, Principle, Reininger.

Q:  What is your favorite season of the TV show "Friends?"

I did say, "ask me anything."  I have never seen an entire episode of "Friends."  I'm more of a "Walking Dead" kind of guy.

-

Q: How much time is spent making music?  How much time is spent listening to other people's music?

I only listen to music as background to cover road noise while driving.  Usually '60s soul.  Totally a nostalgic thing.  While driving I also listen to podcasts.  As far as making music goes, there are no rules.  We all spend minimum time on computers and maximum time outdoors.  I like computers, but we don't support being enslaved to them.  We work more in the winter than the summer.  I don't have a good answer to that question.

-

Q. I notice your name showing up as a creator on CDs.  Will we be seeing a Hardy solo CD at some point?

We do tend to work with a fluid attitude here.  There is less of a preset agenda than in my previous job.  So anything is possible, I suppose.  I like things being possible.  I can confirm I am happy working with Bobuck on his ideas at this time.

Got a burning question about The Residents, Bobuck, me or the meaning of life.  I might ignore it, or I might answer.
