"Guylum Bardot" is a song by The Residents, from their debut album Meet The Residents, released April 1st 1974. It is a short track which is part of a continuous medley of songs on the first side of the album. Its title is a play on the names of Guy Lombardo, a then-popular bandleader and musician, and Brigitte Bardot, a French model and actress.
In 2020, "Guylum Bardot" was selected as one of The Residents' favorite songs in their catalog via a Spotify playlist.
History
An early version from the Meet The Residents sessions can be heard on the 2018 pREServed edition of that album, where the song is banged out on Hammond organ and later played on saxophone, with double bass and horn section as accompaniment. The final album version is faster, adding upright piano from the previous track ("Numb Erone"), and a section with vocals, while the song's main melody is played more brightly on solo trombone and later reprised on horns. The double bass line continues seamlessly into the next track, "Breath and Length".
In 1978, The Residents produced a demo titled "Guylum Bardot '78", seemingly an attempt to remake the song for an unknown occasion. This is a skeletal track featuring only the rhythm track from "Constantinople" with vocals from "Guylum Bardot" hastily laid over. This track remained unreleased until it was included on the pREServed edition of Duck Stab! / Buster & Glen in 2018.
The Residents' lead composer Charles Bobuck sketched a remake of the song in 2014 as part of an abandoned 40th Anniversary remake of Meet The Residents. This version is re-titled "Petunia" on the 2017 EP Clank Clank Clank which collects material from those sessions.
Legacy
The song was at least rehearsed at The Residents' 2005 Australian mini-tour The Way We Were, as evidenced by a rehearsal recording heard on an episode of the BOGcast, and now included on the Klanggalerie edition of the live album. Fans who attended the shows insist that the song was performed for audiences, but no official recording of it has surfaced.
Lyrics

The love that we've been through Was splintered and sent to The end of The rainbow today Now that it's over The grass and the clover Grow over The ground where I lay
Come back Petonia (Come back Petonia) Come back I say (Come back Petonia) I'm hopin' soon y'all (Come back, I pray) Be with me to stay (I'm hopin' soon y'all) Be with me to stay (Be with me to stay)[1]
