Wavelength Infinity: A Sun Ra Tribute

From RZWiki

Wavelength Infinity is a 2xCD Sun Ra tribute album released by Rastascan Records two years after his death. The Residents'contributed an exclusive edit of their 1991 'tip of the top hat' to Sun Ra, "Daydream In Space," re-dubbed "Daydream in Space (Is The Place)" for the collection.

"Daydream in Space (Is The Place)" is made up of three Ra covers the group recorded in 1985 for their abandoned American Composers series, which the group later re-edited and gave vocal overdubs to for their 1991 fan club compilation, Daydream B-Liver. The edit presented on Wavelength Infinity is 3 minutes shorter, and was later featured on the 1998 Residue Deux rarities CD.

History

Sun Ra was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1914. He released his first album in 1957. Over the decades leading up to his death, he created one of the largest and strangest discographies in the music industry. His experimental and abrasive approach to Jazz music was influential to countless artists. Including those who call The Residents. This compilation, which collects 32 tracks comprised of Sun Ra covers and tributes, showcases his wide influence and features an exclusive shortened edit of The Residents' Space Is The Place cover.

The track was conceived during The Residents' ill fated Sun Ra / Ray Charles cover album, recorded between February and May of 1987. It was first released on the compilation Daydream B-Liver in 1991.

This compilation also marks the first time that The Residents and the Gamelan Sekar Jaya would cross paths, but they wouldn't officially collaborate with until 1998's Wormwood at The Fillmore performance.
