The Exorcist is an American media franchise which began with William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel of the same name, and William Friedkin's successful 1973 film adaptation starring Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn. A sequel to the film directed by John Boorman, Exorcist II: The Heretic, followed in 1977, and a third, The Exorcist III, in 1990.

The series continued with two prequels, Exorcist: The Beginning in 2004 and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist in 2005; a television series, also titled The Exorcist, aired on Fox between 2016 and 2017. A new trilogy of films by director David Gordon Green is expected to commence in 2023.

Influence on The Residents

The Residents are known to have taken influence from the soundtracks of the first two films in the series. The melody of the opening section of the suite "Edweena" from their second album Not Available was derived from "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield, featured in the score of the first film; the working title for one section of the suite was "Theme From Exorcist (With Roman Overtones)".

The piece "Magic and Ecstacy" by Ennio Morricone from his score to Exorcist II: The Heretic inspired The Residents' stand-alone song "The Sleeper"; "Magic and Ecstacy" itself was covered by the group's frequent collaborator Snakefinger on his debut solo album, Chewing Hides The Sound, in 1979.
