TAR-Nation (subtitled The Best of Black Tar and the Cry Babies) is an EP credited to Black Tar and the Cry Babies, released in 2017 via Hacienda Bridge.
All six tracks on the EP were originally released in the early 2000s under a Creative Commons license by California musician Stark Effect; on April 1st 2017 they were released in the April Fool's Day issue of Hardy Fox's Hacienda Bridge newsletter, credited to Black Tar.
History
TAR-Nation collects the six songs attributed to Black Tar and the Cry Babies in the April Fool's Day issue of Hardy Fox's Hacienda Bridge newsletter. Each track represents a supposedly unreleased full-length album by Black Tar.
In reality, three of the EP's six tracks ("Bunny Rabbits, Satan, Cheese and Milk", "Stop, I'm Watching TV" and "Think of Me") all originate from a 2003 EP, Mic in Track by California musician Stark Effect. This EP has since been made freely available under a Creative Commons license.
The tracks "Dork" and "Fourteen" were released to Stark Effect's website in the early 2000s, as was the cover of "I Got You, Babe", which uses instrumental backing from Share & Share Alike's karaoke backing track version, with vocals compiled using sound samples from online dictionaries.[1]
Tarnation Serafini was released shortly afterwards as a companion piece to this album, and as a sort of practical joke. As with the six songs on TAR-Nation, none of the material on Serafini was recorded by Black Tar, instead consisting mostly of music by other artists.
