September Song
"September Song" is an American standard popular song composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson. It was introduced by Walter Huston in the 1938 Broadway musical production Knickerbocker Holiday. The song has been recorded by numerous singers and instrumentalists including The Residents.
The Residents (and later, their lead singer Randy Rose) performed the song live as part of their "Sam" series of live performances, premiering it with a small orchestra at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive on June 4th 2010. Later this evolved into Sam's Enchanted Evening featuring many of the same songs such as this one.
History
This song was originally chosen as the opener for So Long Sam with it being mixed with Sam's dad's favorite song, "Sixteen Tons", ending with a reprise of the September song. Sam's Enchanted evening has a few songs before these two, but they follow largely the same structure as they did in the So Long Sam Performance. These songs set up the plot points revolving around his Mom and Dad and his relationship with them, but sadly, there is not much to say about this specific song other than that it's his mommas favorite.
Lyrics
Oh it's a long, long while from May to December but the days grow short when you reach September When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame One I hasnt got time for waiting game
oh the days dwindle down to a precious few September, November, And these few precious days ill spend with you These precious days ill spend with you
