Prometheus' Garden is a short film by animator Bruce Bickford, completed in 1988 and released on DVD in 2008. The first film Bickford had complete creative control over (following his collaborations with musician Frank Zappa), Prometheus' Garden is a twenty-eight minute clay animation inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus.
A new restoration of the film premiered on March 22nd 2025 at TV Eye in Queens, New York; this version features a new soundtrack by twenty-eight artists, each of whom contributed one minute of material to the score. Musicians contributing to the soundtrack included The Residents, J.G. Thirlwell (of Foetus), Brian Chippendale (of Lightning Bolt), Lee Ranaldo (formerly of Sonic Youth) and many more.[1]
Synopsis
Inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus, a Titan who created the first mortals from clay and stole fire from the gods, Prometheus’ Garden immerses viewers in a cinematic universe unlike any other. The dark and magical images of this haunting film unfold in a dreamlike stream of consciousness revealing an unlikely cast of clay characters engaged in a violent struggle for survival. Like all Bickford films, Prometheus’ Garden defies description and simply must be experienced.[2]
