Maurice and Me is a Tumblr blog by Randy Rose, lead singer of The Residents. The blog was active between February 2012 and January 2019, and often featured historical anecdotes about Rose's history with The Residents, as well as further context about Rose himself and projects including the video series In My Room and the Wonder of Weird live tour.

Okay, so people keep asking me all these personal questions, so I guess I will start answering them with a new series of postings about me. I might as well start at the beginning or even before that - here’s my grandma and grandpa. The deer head is from my uncle who killed and ate just about anything that crawled, walked, flew or swam, except people of course (I’m pretty sure about that).

So this is an old picture I found from around the time of the Third Reich ‘n Roll. We shot the movie then a few days later we took these photos. I don’t think this one has ever been used, but I guess it probably showed up somewhere. You have to guess which one is me.

RANDY ROSE - WHO AM I?
Hey Everybody! I’m sorry but this is really not working for me - LIFE!, that’s I’m talking about. Here’s the deal. If you search on the fucking internet for “Randy Rose”, what do you get? “Ravishing Randy Rose”, a wrestler from the 80’s & 90’s or “Randy Rose,” a singing drummer from the a 1990s Christian rock band called Mad at the World. I mean, I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I don’t rate as high as an ex-wrestler who now runs a construction company and a drummer who sang “Walls of Hate.” I’m almost 100 years old and live with a cat in West LA. I couldn’t even get a job as a talking donkey. Carlos hates me. I have to face it - I’m a failure! Something has to change!

RACE CHANGE OPERATION!
Okay, so I started thinking - who is successful in the music business these days? RAP SINGERS! That’s who. I mean if you think about it, it’s kind of a perfect fit for me. I can’t sing - rap singers can’t sing. Basically they are actors who have figured how to make big bucks in the music biz, which is pretty much what i am except of course for the big bucks part. (Did you ever see Ice Cube in “Anaconda?” I mean the guy is a natural.) But there is a slight problem with this scenario - rap singers are BLACK! (except of course for for Vanilla Ice or the Beastie Boys, but they are posers posing as posers so there’s no reason to go there), but then it hit me - A RACE CHANGE OPERATION! After all - Michael Jackson did it. So, it’s the new me - MC RANDY BRANDO! …but then no, I realized that’s too white. Not only that, people would think I’m an old fat white guy instead of just old. So I thought about it a little more and WHAMMO!!! It hit me! Get ready everybody, you are now dealing with the one and only - MC Cocky Ran-!D!

RANDY ZUCKERBERG!
All of a sudden it hit me… music is, like, so YESTERDAY - DUH!!! I mean, when I was young, the cool people from a cultural point of view were all musicians. I mean nobody was cooler than Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Bob Dylan or JAMES BROWN!!! (if you’ve never seen James Brown in the TAMI show, immediately stop whatever you’re doing and go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2nybY647F0) These people spoke to their culture and their culture listened - and cared. Who speaks to people in the music business these days - Justin Beaver! Is anybody listening? I don’t think so. So I thought some more and tried to figure out who does speak to their culture these days and it hit me - KABOOM! Computer geeks! I mean who could possibly be cooler than Steve Jobs!. Okay, he’s no James Dean, but how much cooler does it get than dying when you’re absolutely on top. We’re talking Jesus Jobs here! But think about it, when I was young everybody wanted to come to San Francisco to get laid and wear flowers in their hair. Now everyone want to come to San Francisco to get laid and GET RICH! And I’m stuck in LA. But I can change that - just like I can change my name. MC Cocky Ran-!D! is history - from now on it’s RANDY ZUCKERBERG!
