History

Matching Face & Nightie was conceived and shot on Super 8mm film in Portland, Oregon in 1976, by KBOO-FM disc jockey William Reinhardt; the film was inspired by an "artistic idea" suggested by his friends The Residents, who were deep into production on their troubled (and ultimately abandoned) musical video feature Vileness Fats. Reinhardt wanted to demonstrate to the group that he could make an "equally strange" film.

In addition to inspiring the film, The Residents also "coached" Reinhardt in camera work and lighting for the film. Reinhardt was also assisted in making the film by co-director Larry Gilbert, and Meta Jardine, who assisted with costumes as well as the concept and execution. It starred Carole Lombardo as "one of the crawlers". Reinhardt dedicated his later YouTube upload of the film to the memories of the three.

The film was a winner in the NW Film and Video Festival in Portland, Oregon in 1976. Reinhardt uploaded the "original edit" of the film to YouTube on August 19th 2006.

Synopsis

"From the media alter,[sic] a paranoid/humanoid religious quandary. S-8 film captures strange creatures in a haunted house! Dedicated to the loving memory of Meta Jardine who helped with the costumes, concept and execution. Also in memory of Carole Lombardo (one of the crawlers) and Larry Gilbert (who co-directed).

This was an artistic idea first suggested by The Residents who coached me about the use of camera and lighting. Also, I wanted to show them (after viewing 'Vileness Fats') that I could make an equally strange movie. Winner in the NW Film & Video Festival, Portland, Oregon 1976." - William Reinhardt, YouTube video notes, August 19th 2006
