Line - Der Sampler 13
Der Sampler 13 (The Sampler 13) is a compilation album released by German import label Line Records in 1986. It features Kaw-Liga by The Residents.
Background
Line's Der Sampler series of compilations, of which there are forty, began in early 1986 as a way to promote the many LPs imported by Line Records.
This edition, the thirteenth, mainly focuses on older albums imported by the label, with most material ranging from 1965 to 1983. The Residents' Kaw-Liga was the only exception to this, being released earlier that same month by Line Records. This compilation would be Line's final Residents release, perhaps hinting that it did not sell as well as anticipated.
The album features 'Psychotic Reaction', a song that The Residents had previously covered in 1974 for their Third Reich 'n Roll album, as well as a 1980 live performance of The Letter, which The Residents had covered twice. The first time for The Third Reich 'n Roll and later in 1982 for Assorted Secrets, is also featured.
Link Wray, who performs a Bob Dylan cover here, is also featured on the Hank Williams tribute album, I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, which similarly features a selection from The Residents' Stars & Hank Forever album. The Fall are also featured on the compilation albums New Wave Club Class•X - Sinner's Day 10, and Rough Trade Shops - Covers. New Wave Club contains The Residents' Kaw-Liga as the opening track, whilst Rough Trad Shops features Jailhouse Rock. French noise rock band Deity Guns has covered both The Fall and The Residents' music.
