Chris McGregor (1962 - July 31st 2023)[1][2] was an American production designer and lighting technician, noted for his work with a number of artists including The Residents, Phish and Project Bandaloop. In 2001, he established the company Stage II Design and Production.[3]
He first worked with The Residents on their international tour Cube-E in 1989 and 1990. In October 1993 he met the band Phish and, after mentioning his work with The Residents, became that band's main stage designer throughout the 1990s. He designed the hot dog that Phish famously flew in at Boston Garden on December 31st 1994 and at their Millennium New Year shows.[3]
In 1997, McGregor accepted a job as technical director for a fundraiser in aid of the Tech Museum in San Jose, and asked The Residents to participate; they would ultimately perform their show Disfigured Night for a "small but wealthy crowd", from thirty feet above the entrance to Adobe's world headquarters.[4]
McGregor continued to work with The Residents on their live shows, including Wormwood Live in 1999 and 2000 and Icky Flix Live in 2001. In 2008, McGregor designed the "schizophrenic" stage layout for the group's Bunny Boy tour.[5] In 2017 he designed the lighting for the In Between Dreams tour.
McGregor passed away unexpectedly aged 61 following a heart attack on July 31st 2023.[2] He was warmly remembered by collaborators including Phish and The Residents.[1]
