Anganok Instrumental
Anganok Insturmental is a single recorded by The Residents in 1991, and released in 2010.
Background
The Anganok instrumental originated out of a spring 1990 Jam session held by The Residents, coming out of the same session that birthed Benny The Bouncing Bump. When sessions for Freak Show started the instrumental was quietly shelved until early 1991, when The Residents discovered a local artist and poet named Spoonman. Interested in each-others ideas, The Residents pulled out the unused instrumental, and got to work on expanding it, whilst Spoonman developed a spoken word story around it.
The instrumental would be played live by The Residents throughout their short run of performances with Spoonman in 1991. After these few performances, the Anganok project was abandoned, but the suite was not forgotten. A short excerpt from it, dubbed 'Willie's Theme', was used as the wraparound theme on their 1993 compilation album, Uncle Willie's Highly Opinionated Guide to The Residents. A longer excerpt from the piece was included in the 1997 box-set, Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses. A 13 minute excerpt was released digitally in 2009, before the full 21 minute piece was released on the Anganok CD album in 2020.
