The Ladies' Believe It or Die! is an unofficial Residents-focused comic feature panel curated by the fan group The Mysterious Spanish Ladies, featuring art accompanied by textual factoids about The Residents, produced by members of The Ladies and their friends and collaborators.
The second comic to be associated with The Mysterious Spanish Ladies as a group (following the earlier strip The Negative Zone), Believe It or Die! premiered as part of Meet The Residents Wiki's stable of fan-made comics on July 16th 2023.
Description
Believe It or Die! is an affectionate parody of the long-running syndicated comic feature Ripley's Believe It or Not!, which officially premiered in October 1919 and has continued to the present day.
Whereas Believe It or Not! features unusual factoids from history and culture, Believe It or Die! instead examines curious arcana from the canon of The Residents, in particular myths, lies, half-truths, mysteries and surprising facts, with illustrations by The Mysterious Spanish Ladies and their friends from the Residents fan community.
The idea of creating a Believe It or Not! parody focused on the lore of The Residents was originally explored by comic artist Matt Howarth, as a section titled "Residents' Believe It or Die!" in the centerfold of the 1995 graphic novel Stalking Ralph - a fact unknown to the creators of The Ladies' Believe It or Die! until December 2023, when one Mysterious Spanish Lady purchased a copy of the Howarth book.
